You are cordially invited to a day of networking, leadership skills development, and community action focused on "Growing Leaders" in the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
In addition to workshops on personal and professional development, this conference will feature an intergenerational forum, as well as opportunities for networking with members from various organizations.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:
Session I: 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
1) Build Your Brand: Making a Great First Impression

If you were a product, how would you market yourself to stand apart from the competition? Learn to use the strategies of successful companies to grab the attention of employers, funders, and anyone with whom you want to make a great first impression. Learn tips and tactics essential to a great first impression and positive personal brand.
2) Being a 21st Century Leader
JD Hokoyama, President & CEO, Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc.
What are the characteristics of an effective leader and how does one become
a leader? During this presentation, participants are introduced to LEAP's
leadership framework of becoming a 21st Century leader. Techniques for
incorporating key elements of this new leadership framework will be shared
so that participants can become successful leaders.
3) "UsTube?" Media as a Tool for Civic Engagement - Panel
- Media and Engagement within the Asian-Pacific Community -

How is media impacting the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, and how can we impact the media? Panelists will discuss traditional uses of media for engagement, evolving ideas of what it means to be engaged, and how social networking and new media present new challenges and opportunities for civic discourse.
Participants will explore how to get involved and make a difference in the community within this presentation by key AAPI leaders in the technology and film-making field.

1) Networking and Mentoring

What are the characteristics of effective networking? In this workshop, you explore the impact of networking and mentoring within your personal and professional life. You will have an opportunity to not only learn how to become an effective coach/mentor, but also learn how to engage others and seek coaches and mentees.
2) Effective Work and Communication Styles

Have you ever felt that you have a different communication style than others around you? How to be an effective communicator in different environments? This workshop is aimed to learn how to understand yourself and others'communication styles, while also trying to understand yourself and others' behaviors, in order to be effective in any environment.
3) Rising Above the Model Minority Stereotype

Why are Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders considered the ‘model minority’? What are the realities hiding behind this myth that affect our community? Join this discussion on dispelling the myth of the model minority and learn about real issues Asian American and Pacific Islanders are facing today and how to overcome them, from key leaders in the community who have “been there”.
Panelists will introduce and discuss issues such as the Model Minority Myth and other stereotypes of APAs, plus how these inaccurate portrayals of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders affect us in the workplace and the world. Our panel of leaders in business, education, arts, tech and public service will also share how they surmounted these obstacles on their diverse paths to success.
