WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

Session 1: 10:15 am – 12:15 pm

1) Assertiveness Training
Presenter: Mark Nozaki, President, Odyssey Leadership Consulting

Do you hate to “make waves?” Are you succeeding in making yourself heard? Asian American and Pacific Islanders who do top-notch work sometimes find themselves being overlooked because they do not assert themselves. This workshop tackles possible reasons for these problems and offers practical ways to get the recognition they deserve.

2)  Interviewing Skills
Presenter: Nur Atalay, Learning and Development Supervisor, State Farm Insurance Companies

What does it take to get the job? This is an interactive workshop that covers the do’s and don’ts that will land you that next job. Come hear personal experiences from your fellow community members.

3) Effective Communication Styles
Presenter: Linda Akutagawa, Senior VP of Resource and Business Development, LEAP

Participants will be introduced to a 4-style leadership model and explore the strengths and weaknesses of each style. This workshop will enlighten participants on how to leverage the strengths of their style of leadership as well as learn to work effectively with those of other styles.

4) Getting Ahead: Planning for Career Success
Presenter: Karen Watai, Founder and President, KWA Leadership Consulting, LLC

A successful career does not just happen, it requires thoughtful planning. Participants will be provided with a framework for examining their career and lifestyle needs, preferences and choices in the context of today's rapidly changing workplace. This framework rests upon a unique blend of values, beliefs and attitudes drawn from our multicultural heritage as Asian Pacific Americans.

5) Risk Taking
Presenter: JD Hokoyama, President & CEO, LEAP

Though often feared, taking risks is essential to personal and professional development. Participants will define risk taking, explore why people do or do not take risks and discuss possible cultural influences. Through this workshop, participants will learn strategies of how and when to use a risk-taking process model to think “out of the box” and go beyond their comfort zone.
